Three specific traps are worth memorising. First, ∆ and Δ are not the same character: ∆ is the increment sign at U+2206, Δ is Greek capital delta at U+0394. They look identical in most fonts, but find-and-replace, spell check, and sorting all treat them as different, which is why a search for one silently misses the other. The same applies to ∅ the empty set (U+2205) versus Ø the Scandinavian letter, and to × the multiplication sign versus a lowercase letter x.
Second, the vulgar fractions ½ ⅓ ⅞ are single characters with a built-in slash, not three characters stacked. Fonts that lack them synthesise a lookalike, so the stroke weight can shift slightly between your screen and someone else's — harmless in a bio, but avoid them in a table where the numbers need to align.
Third, spreadsheets read the first character of a cell as an instruction. A cell that begins with ±, ≠, or − is fine, but one that begins with = or + is parsed as a formula and throws an error. Type an apostrophe before the symbol to force the cell into text mode, and the operator stays exactly as pasted.
Unicode vs LaTeX: Which to Use in Docs, Slides and Chat
There are two ways to get mathematics onto a screen, and picking the wrong one costs a surprising amount of time. Plain Unicode characters — everything on this page — are just text: they can be copied, searched, sorted, read aloud by a screen reader, and pasted into a field that accepts nothing else. Use plain Unicode for anything inline: chat and Discord messages, Instagram captions, slide titles, file names, alt text, spreadsheet headers, form fields, and the short expressions inside a sentence — x ∈ ℝ, n ≥ 0, π ≈ 3.14. Google Slides has no equation editor at all, so pasted characters are your only realistic option there. Learning-platform answer boxes usually strip rich content too, and plain characters go through untouched.
Use a real equation editor as soon as you need vertical structure: stacked fractions, matrices, limits with an index underneath, integrals with bounds, or exponents longer than a single digit. In Word that is Insert > Equation; in Notion, type /math for a KaTeX block; in Overleaf and other LaTeX tools it is the native mode. The catch is that these sets are incomplete. There is a full superscript digit range, but only a partial superscript alphabet — ⁿ exists, q does not — and the subscript letters cover barely a dozen characters. So x², 10⁻⁶, and CO₂ are safe, while an arbitrary variable raised to another variable is not. When the notation outgrows the characters available, that is the signal to switch to the equation editor rather than approximating with a caret. Two side notes. The prime marks ′ and ″ are the correct characters for feet and inches or minutes and seconds of arc — straight quotes are a typographic substitute that autocorrect will happily turn into curly quotes and ruin. And the raised digits double neatly as footnote markers in bios and captions where a superscript button does not exist: writing "best rates in town¹" lets you park the caveat on the next line.
