Understanding Unicode

Unicode is an international standard that assigns a unique number to every character across all writing systems. This includes not just letters and numbers, but thousands of symbols, emojis, and special characters.

Unlike emojis (which can look different on iPhone vs Android), Unicode symbols are rendered using fonts, which means they appear more consistently across different devices and platforms.

Our collection draws from various Unicode blocks including Miscellaneous Symbols, Dingbats, Mathematical Operators, Box Drawing, and many more.

Those block names map directly onto the pages you can browse here. The twelve astrological signs, from ♈ to ♓, sit in the Miscellaneous Symbols block and are gathered on our zodiac symbols page. Mathematical Operators supplies the ∞, ≠, ≈, √ and ∑ characters listed under math symbols — used as often for decoration in a bio as for actual equations. And the Currency Symbols block covers the newer glyphs such as ₹, ₩, ₽ and ₿ alongside the older $, £ and ¥, all collected on our currency symbols page.

Because every one of these is a real Unicode code point rather than an image, they paste cleanly into an Instagram bio, a Discord nickname, a document or a spreadsheet — which is the whole reason we catalogue them by block and by use case instead of dumping one giant list on a single page.
